2008 Florida SuperState V Scholastic Chess Championships
Thank you to all the players, parents, coaches, staff, and volunteers who helped make this tournament happen!
Planning is already underway to make the 2009 SuperState VI the best ever. We listened carefully to all of the helpful comments offered to improve the tournament. We will endeavor to locate a site where parents, team mates, and coaches can collect comfortably while the games are underway. Other important objectives include:
many more postings of pairing and standings charts throughout the common areas;
a coaches table for obtaining team pairing and standing printouts;
onsite webmaster for immediate online of pairings and standing; and,
better structured and managed bughouse and blitz tournaments.
Plans are also underway to bring these improvements to the four annual regional events as well as to the FISS (and possibly a grade championship to round off the FSCL series of annual scholastic chess tournaments).
If you have questions or comments about the FSCL and/or its tournaments, you may contact the FSCL Commissioner, Mr. Tim Tusing:

INFORMATION ON THE 2008 FLORIDA INVITATIONAL SUPERSTARS ("FISS"):
What is the "FISS"?
The FISS is an invitational state scholastic tournament. Only those who qualify may participate in this very prestigious state scholastic tournament. Of particular note is that this tournament determines the Florida representatives to the Denker and Polgar national tournaments (top male and female players from the K-12 open section).
How to I qualify to play in the FISS?
WE WILL BE DETERMINING QUALIFERS AT THE SUPERSTATE V TOURNAMENT
Read the following to learn how we select the participants:
The top 2 teams and individuals in each section from each of the 4 regional tournaments (above) will be eligible to participate in the FISS. Thus, if you place 1st or 2nd in your section at any one of the four regional qualifiers, you will be eligible to participate in the 2008 FISS. Also, if you are on a school team which places 1st or 2nd in its section, your school will receive an invitation. Your school designates who shall represent its team. Schools can send up to 5 players (but only up to 4 boards count towards the team's score). If this is confusing, remember that in scholastic tournaments, awards are given to individuals as well as to teams. Players on school teams essentially wear "two hats" as they play, one as an individual competitor and one as a team player.
The top 4 teams and individuals from each of the OPEN SECTIONS of the SuperState V Scholastic Chess Championships who have not previously qualified will be eligible to participate in the FISS. As we examine the top four teams and individuals, we will pass over already qualified teams and individuals. This means that your team could come in 5th, etc., but might still be eligible to participate in the FISS because a team above yours may have already qualified at one of the 4 regional tournaments. This system will also be used for determining individual eligibility.
Florida scholastic players appearing in the United States Chess Federation's top 100 list for the month of April, 2008, are eligible to participate in the 2008 FISS.
When is the 2008 FISS?
The tournament is scheduled for May 3-4, 2008.
Where will it be held?
How much is the entry fee?
Zero dollars! However, it is by invitation only. Check back soon for an online registration link.
